Spot Bitcoin ETFs Reverse Course with Hundreds of Millions in Net Outflows

Published

on

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded substantial net outflows late last week, erasing much of the strong inflows seen earlier and turning October’s cumulative flows negative in several trackers. The reversal coincided with a weekend price dip in Bitcoin below $80,000, elevated oil prices, and Middle East geopolitical headlines that weighed on risk appetite.

Data from SoSoValue and Farside Investors showed roughly $635–$636 million in net outflows on Thursday, October 22—the largest single-day withdrawal since June. This more than reversed the prior day’s approximately $528 million in inflows. Friday saw an additional roughly $138 million in net outflows, bringing the two-day total near $773 million. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity’s FBTC accounted for the largest share of the redemptions on Thursday, with IBIT losing about $254 million and FBTC about $217–$218 million. Other funds including ARK 21Shares’ ARKB, Bitwise’s BITB, and Grayscale’s GBTC also posted outflows, while Morgan Stanley’s MSBT recorded a small inflow.

Earlier in the week had been notably stronger. The first three sessions (October 19–21) drew more than $1 billion in combined net inflows across some reports, with individual days topping $520 million. The late-week reversal left the week with a modest net positive in some tallies (around $300 million) but pushed October’s month-to-date flows into negative territory (roughly $175 million net outflows in SoSoValue/Farside compilations). Spot Ether ETFs also saw outflows during the same period.

Market context
The flows aligned with Bitcoin’s weekend weakness, during which BTC briefly traded below $80,000 before recovering toward the low-to-mid $80,000s. Analysts linked the broader risk-off move to rising oil prices tied to Middle East tensions and equity market softness, particularly in technology shares. ETF flows remain a closely watched short-term sentiment gauge even as cumulative net inflows since the products launched stay large—above $57 billion across trackers, with total net assets near $105 billion.

Institutional pipeline counterpoint
Amid the outflows, Franklin Templeton advanced two new products set to become effective around October 27. The Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (proposed ticker FBEQ) and Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FIBT) start with a 95% allocation to U.S. equities and 5% to Bitcoin exposure. The distinctive feature is that stock dividends are systematically reinvested into Bitcoin rather than additional shares, creating a recurring mechanism for building Bitcoin exposure within a traditional equity portfolio. Management fees are low (0.09% and 0.19%). The products illustrate continued product innovation even as near-term flows turn cautious.

Outlook
Short-term ETF flows have swung sharply with macro headlines and price action. While the latest outflows signal cooling institutional demand in the near term, the scale of cumulative inflows and the arrival of new dividend-linked products underscore the ongoing institutionalization of Bitcoin exposure. Traders will watch the next few sessions and the Federal Reserve decision for whether outflows persist or reverse.

Aviva Investors Tokenizes £22 Billion

Published

on

LONDON — October 26, 2026 — Aviva Investors, the asset-management arm of UK insurer Aviva, launched a tokenized share class of its £22 billion (approximately $29 billion) Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger in partnership with Ripple. Aviva itself invested £50 million ($66 million) in the new class.

The structure uses a “digital twin” model. Investor holdings are represented on-chain on the XRP Ledger, while the underlying Ireland-domiciled UCITS money-market fund continues to operate off-chain. Assets remain held by the existing custodian, The Bank of New York Mellon. Investors in the tokenized share class receive the same investment objective, risk profile, liquidity characteristics, and regulatory protections as holders of the conventional fund, which was first launched in 2002. The fund invests in high-grade, sterling-denominated short-term debt instruments and offers daily liquidity.

This is Aviva Investors’ second tokenized money-market offering on XRPL. It follows a tokenized share class of its USD Liquidity Fund launched in July 2026, which received approval from the Central Bank of Ireland. Combined investment across the two tokenized share classes now exceeds £86 million ($116 million). The new launch positions Aviva among Europe’s larger providers of tokenized money-market funds and expands institutional access to the existing product through blockchain rails. Eligible investors with digital wallets can access the tokenized class; Komainu provided regulated digital-asset custody support and Licuido supplied tokenization infrastructure.

Significance
The £22 billion figure refers to the total assets of the Sterling Liquidity Fund across all share classes, not the amount newly placed on-chain. Tokenization creates a digital access layer and ownership record rather than migrating the underlying portfolio onto the ledger. The approach preserves the regulated fund structure while adding on-chain representation, settlement features, and potential operational efficiencies.

Outlook
The launch extends Aviva’s partnership with Ripple, first announced earlier in 2026, and demonstrates growing institutional use of public blockchain infrastructure for regulated fund products. Tokenized money-market funds continue to serve as an early adoption path for real-world asset tokenization, particularly where daily liquidity and collateral use cases are relevant. Aviva Investors CEO Mark Versey has said tokenized funds can increase efficiency and improve client outcomes. Further growth will depend on investor uptake beyond the firm’s own seed investment and broader market development of on-chain fund distribution.
