Crypto Market Faces Pressure as Bitcoin Tests Support Near $78K Amid Macro Headwinds

Published

on

The $78,000 handle did not hold the session. It was the opening argument.

On September 10 the complex was already leaning lower. Early CoinGecko-style snapshots had total crypto market cap near $2.75–$2.76 trillion, down about 0.9%, with 24-hour volume around $95 billion. Bitcoin printed in the $78,000–$78,400 zone in several reports — $78,039, $78,326, $78,415 depending on the stamp — after tagging the high $79,000s the day before. Ethereum sat near $2,460–$2,480. That was the mild-to-moderate correction in the brief. Then wholesale inflation landed.

PPI did the damage the jobs report started

August PPI rose 0.4% month-on-month and 5.4% year-on-year, a tick above the 5.3% consensus and up from July’s 4.8% (revised higher in some tables). Core PPI was softer on the month at 0.2%, which did not save the bond market. CME FedWatch pushed a 25 bp hike at the September 16 FOMC from the low-to-mid 60s toward 70–76%, depending on the print. Two weeks ago that number was closer to 35%, then Warsh at Jackson Hole, then payrolls, then this. The path is one way until CPI argues otherwise.

Treasuries sold with it. The 10-year traded toward 4.93–4.97%. The 30-year tagged about 5.35%, a level some desks had not seen since 2007. WTI cleared $100 for the first time since May; Brent ran $105–$109 on the same Middle East / Hormuz tape. The ECB hiked 25 bp to a 2.50% deposit rate the same day. Risk assets do not need all of those headlines. They got all of them.

Where the tape actually is

By late Thursday and Friday morning, bitcoin had lost $77,000. Intraday lows printed near $76,650–$76,750. Spot quotes into Friday sat in the mid-to-high $76,000s. Ethereum slipped toward $2,440. Total cap in later snapshots ran $2.62–$2.73 trillion, depending on the feed — a step down from the $2.76 trillion open. Coinglass-style liquidation boards showed $380–$450 million flushed in a day, the bulk of it longs. Open interest on bitcoin faded. Spot bitcoin ETFs, after the $987 million green week, had flipped: about $47 million out on September 8 and $120 million on September 9 in Farside-style totals. The structural bid paused. It did not vanish. It stopped catching the knife for a few sessions.

Alts ate more of it. Zcash, still working off the $1,000 breakout, was tagged for double-digit losses in some 24-hour windows. Majors lagged bitcoin on the percentage tape. A handful of launchpad names and thin-beta tokens still printed green — the same Solana mint-factory rotation that just set a 263,000-token day — which is not strength. It is leftover casino flow while duration assets reprice.

Levels and the only print that matters today

Technicians had been defending $77,000–$78,000 as the post-payrolls shelf. That shelf is being tested from the other side. Glassnode-style cost-basis maps still show supply stacked $76,000–$82,000, with a heavier long-term-holder block $83,000–$86,000. Lose $76,000 on a hot CPI and the conversation becomes $75,700 then $72,000. Hold the cluster and this is still a range under an $82,000 ceiling.

Friday, September 11: U.S. CPI, 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Street sketches in some books: +0.4% headline, +0.2% core. Soft keeps hike odds from going to 80 and gives $78,000 a bid. Hot plus $100 oil is how you get a fifth down session and a 10-year through 5%.

September 16: FOMC. The meeting is no longer a coin flip. Markets have spent two weeks moving the probability. CPI is the last excuse to move it back.

Fear & Greed hanging in the high 60s while price makes lower highs is the other tell. Sentiment has not capitulated. Price has. That combination usually resolves with one more flush or one more squeeze, not a quiet grind. Until the CPI number is on the wire, treat $78,000 as yesterday’s support and $76,000–$77,000 as today’s. The macro stack — PPI, oil, the long bond, a 70% hike market — is doing what it always does to a non-yielding asset that just spent August looking invincible.

Strategy (MicroStrategy) Adds 250 Bitcoin, Holdings Reach 848,250 BTC

Published

on

Strategy, Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR), the company led by Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, acquired an additional 250 bitcoin for approximately $21.5 million between October 5 and October 11, 2026, at an average price of $86,194 per coin (including fees and expenses). The purchase brings the firm’s total holdings to 848,250 BTC.

The company funded the acquisition primarily through net proceeds of about $21 million from at-the-market sales of 125,183 shares of its Class A common stock (MSTR), with the remaining roughly $0.5 million drawn from its USD cash balance. No preferred stock was sold during the period. Strategy’s cumulative bitcoin investment now stands at roughly $64 billion, acquired at an average cost basis of approximately $75,444 per coin. At recent market prices, the holdings represent more than 4% of Bitcoin’s fixed 21 million supply cap and carry substantial unrealized gains.

In the same weekly update, Strategy reported repurchasing 1,932,145 shares of its STRC preferred stock (Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock) for an aggregate of about $192.4 million. The company maintains a large USD reserve—previously reported near $4.88–$5.5 billion—to support preferred stock dividends and interest payments on outstanding debt. Additional cash balances remain available for treasury activities, including further bitcoin purchases.

Saylor highlighted the latest acquisition on X with the familiar phrase “There’s always room for more orange,” continuing his long-running pattern of signaling accumulation. Strategy remains the largest publicly traded corporate holder of bitcoin. The move occurred against a backdrop of elevated volatility, with bitcoin trading in the roughly $81,000–$84,000 range around October 12 after earlier strength above $84,000.

The latest purchase marks continued, if more modest, weekly accumulation following larger buys in prior weeks. Strategy has paired ongoing bitcoin treasury expansion with active capital management, including preferred-stock repurchases, while relying on equity issuance and existing cash reserves to fund purchases.
