Crypto Liquidations Surge Past $400 Million in Hours as Bitcoin Briefly Dips Below $80,000

Published

on

Bitcoin briefly fell below the $80,000 level on Saturday, October 24, 2026—its weakest point in more than a month—triggering a wave of leveraged liquidations amid thin weekend liquidity and broader risk-off sentiment. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, elevated oil prices, and continued institutional selling pressure from spot Bitcoin ETFs amplified the move.

CoinGlass data showed roughly $404 million in long liquidations in a four-hour window, part of a larger $436 million total in that period. Broader 24-hour liquidation figures across sources ranged from about $670 million to over $830 million, with longs accounting for the vast majority—often 80–95% of the total. Ether liquidations were proportionally heavy relative to its market size, and more than 200,000 traders were affected in some counts. The largest single liquidation reported was an $11.85 million long position on Binance’s ETHUSDT pair.

Bitcoin touched lows near $79,280–$79,750 during the sell-off before recovering. It closed the day near $80,791 on some CMC-linked snapshots and has since stabilized around $80,500–$80,600 as of early October 25. The drop erased earlier-week gains that had seen BTC approach $85,000 midweek. Thin weekend trading volumes made the market more sensitive to cascading forced sales once the psychological $80,000 level gave way.

Macro and institutional backdrop
The move tracked risk-off sentiment linked to Middle East tensions. Brent crude has traded at multi-month highs amid reports of Houthi activity and concerns over potential escalation involving Iran, which has kept inflation fears alive and limited expectations for near-term Federal Reserve easing. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs had already recorded heavy outflows earlier in the week, including roughly $636 million in net withdrawals on October 22 that erased the prior day’s inflows. Continued ETF outflows added to selling pressure even as weekend markets operated with lower depth.

Analysts pointed to the combination of elevated oil prices, equity market weakness (particularly in tech), and the upcoming Federal Reserve decision as ongoing overhangs. The $80,000 level has also been noted in relation to average purchase prices for some corporate Bitcoin treasury holders, adding psychological weight to the break.

Outlook
Bitcoin has found some support above its intraday lows and is trading near $80,500 as of October 25. While the liquidation flush cleared a portion of crowded long positioning, open interest and leverage remain elevated. Further downside risk persists if oil stays elevated or equity markets resume selling, though a sustained recovery above $81,000–$82,000 would ease near-term pressure. The episode underscores crypto’s continued sensitivity to macro and geopolitical developments even as institutional products mature.

Spot Bitcoin ETFs Reverse Course with Hundreds of Millions in Net Outflows

Published

on

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded substantial net outflows late last week, erasing much of the strong inflows seen earlier and turning October’s cumulative flows negative in several trackers. The reversal coincided with a weekend price dip in Bitcoin below $80,000, elevated oil prices, and Middle East geopolitical headlines that weighed on risk appetite.

Data from SoSoValue and Farside Investors showed roughly $635–$636 million in net outflows on Thursday, October 22—the largest single-day withdrawal since June. This more than reversed the prior day’s approximately $528 million in inflows. Friday saw an additional roughly $138 million in net outflows, bringing the two-day total near $773 million. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) and Fidelity’s FBTC accounted for the largest share of the redemptions on Thursday, with IBIT losing about $254 million and FBTC about $217–$218 million. Other funds including ARK 21Shares’ ARKB, Bitwise’s BITB, and Grayscale’s GBTC also posted outflows, while Morgan Stanley’s MSBT recorded a small inflow.

Earlier in the week had been notably stronger. The first three sessions (October 19–21) drew more than $1 billion in combined net inflows across some reports, with individual days topping $520 million. The late-week reversal left the week with a modest net positive in some tallies (around $300 million) but pushed October’s month-to-date flows into negative territory (roughly $175 million net outflows in SoSoValue/Farside compilations). Spot Ether ETFs also saw outflows during the same period.

Market context
The flows aligned with Bitcoin’s weekend weakness, during which BTC briefly traded below $80,000 before recovering toward the low-to-mid $80,000s. Analysts linked the broader risk-off move to rising oil prices tied to Middle East tensions and equity market softness, particularly in technology shares. ETF flows remain a closely watched short-term sentiment gauge even as cumulative net inflows since the products launched stay large—above $57 billion across trackers, with total net assets near $105 billion.

Institutional pipeline counterpoint
Amid the outflows, Franklin Templeton advanced two new products set to become effective around October 27. The Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (proposed ticker FBEQ) and Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF (FIBT) start with a 95% allocation to U.S. equities and 5% to Bitcoin exposure. The distinctive feature is that stock dividends are systematically reinvested into Bitcoin rather than additional shares, creating a recurring mechanism for building Bitcoin exposure within a traditional equity portfolio. Management fees are low (0.09% and 0.19%). The products illustrate continued product innovation even as near-term flows turn cautious.

Outlook
Short-term ETF flows have swung sharply with macro headlines and price action. While the latest outflows signal cooling institutional demand in the near term, the scale of cumulative inflows and the arrival of new dividend-linked products underscore the ongoing institutionalization of Bitcoin exposure. Traders will watch the next few sessions and the Federal Reserve decision for whether outflows persist or reverse.
