Bitcoin Slides Below $81,500 as Tech Sell-Off and Elevated Oil Prices Hit Risk Assets

Published

on

Bitcoin fell sharply on October 22, 2026, trading near $81,300–$81,600 with a market capitalization of roughly $1.63–$1.64 trillion after dropping more than 3% in 24 hours. Ethereum declined to the $2,370–$2,400 range (market cap near $291 billion), while the broader crypto market shed around 2–3%. The move followed a brief push toward the mid-$84,000s earlier in the week that failed to hold.

The decline tracked weakness in equities. The Nasdaq Composite closed down approximately 2.6% on Thursday—its steepest one-day drop since June—amid renewed concerns over AI capital spending and mixed results from Tesla and Meta. Meta shares fell nearly 7% after the company raised its spending outlook and announced plans involving non-voting shares to fund AI initiatives, while Tesla also declined. The sell-off extended into Asian markets. Brent crude held above $111–$113 amid geopolitical supply risks linked to Middle East tensions, including attacks that heightened fears of disruption and limited room for easier monetary policy.

Liquidations totaled hundreds of millions of dollars, predominantly long positions. Reports ranged from roughly $383 million to over $450 million across major venues in the 24-hour window, with Binance accounting for a large share and the biggest single liquidation exceeding $11 million on a Bitcoin long. Bitcoin briefly tested levels near or below $81,000 after the failed breakout attempt.

Outlook: Macro headwinds remain the dominant driver. Sustained oil strength and equity volatility continue to pressure crypto’s correlation with risk assets. Support near the low-$80,000s is being watched closely after the rejection from the mid-$84,000s. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs also saw notable outflows on October 22 (around $635 million in one dataset), reversing prior inflows and adding to short-term institutional demand softness. Further moves in tech stocks, oil, and upcoming U.S. data or Fed signals will likely set the near-term tone.

BNB Standard (Nasdaq: BNC) to Ring Nasdaq Opening Bell on October 26 Under New CEO Alex Odagiu

Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) amplified the news on October 21, 2026, by quoting BNB Standard Corporation’s announcement and posting “🔔&🔔.” The Nasdaq-listed company (ticker: BNC), which describes itself as the world’s largest corporate BNB treasury, will ring the Nasdaq Opening Bell at the MarketSite in Times Square, New York, at 9:30 a.m. ET on Monday, October 26. The ceremony celebrates its rebrand from CEA Industries and the appointment of Alex Odagiu as Chief Executive Officer.

Company Background and Rebrand

BNB Standard (formerly CEA Industries) shifted toward a BNB-focused corporate treasury strategy after a roughly $500 million private placement completed in August 2025. As of July 31, 2026, it held 515,544 BNB valued at approximately $302.3 million, representing about 93.1% of total assets. Digital assets (primarily BNB) dominate the balance sheet.

On September 29, 2026, the company formally adopted the name BNB Standard Corporation following a five-day advisory community vote on X. Nearly 5,799 votes were cast across four shortlisted names, with “BNB Standard” receiving the largest share at roughly 47%. The Nasdaq ticker remains BNC (warrants continue as BNCWW and BNCWZ), and the CUSIP is unchanged. The rebrand also closed a prior governance dispute with YZi Labs that was resolved via a June 2026 cooperation agreement.

The company plans to operate its own validator on BNB Chain (technical operations handled by a specialist infrastructure partner under BNB Standard’s governance), with treasury BNB remaining with qualified custodians. Validator rewards are variable and not guaranteed. Odagiu has emphasized growing BNB per share and building an operating business on BNB Chain.

Alex Odagiu: Biography and Career Path

Alex Odagiu, age 35, was appointed CEO effective October 19, 2026. He had served as Interim President and a member of the Board of Directors since June 2026. In connection with the appointment, he resigned as an Investment Partner at YZi Labs (formerly Binance Labs).

Career timeline:

  • 2014–2018: Investment Banking Division at Goldman Sachs International (Analyst then Associate).
  • 2019–2021: Associate at Letterone Technology (UK) LLP, a London-based technology-focused investment firm.
  • September 2021: Joined YZi Labs (then Binance Labs) as Investment Manager.
  • 2022–September 2025: Investment Director at YZi Labs, covering token, equity, and strategic investments. He mentored and judged across 10 seasons of the BNB Chain Most Valuable Builder (MVB) accelerator and was involved in the EASY Residency incubation program. Investments included projects such as Avalon, Aspecta, Canton, Hemi, Concrete, Mysten Labs, and Aptos.
  • September 2025–October 2026: Promoted to Investment Partner at YZi Labs, focusing on DeFi, payments, stablecoins, RWA tokenization, and AI-crypto convergence.
  • June 2026: Appointed Interim President and director of BNB Standard (then CEA Industries) amid the governance settlement with YZi Labs.
  • October 19, 2026: Named Chief Executive Officer; continues on the Board.

Odagiu holds an M.A. (Hons) in Economics and Mathematics from the University of St Andrews. His employment agreement provides a $525,000 annual base salary with a target bonus equal to 75% of base salary. He has stated that most institutional investors have yet to study BNB and that a public company vehicle with clear disclosures can help expand that access.

Nasdaq Ceremony and Market Context

The October 26 event will feature Odagiu ringing the bell alongside board members, the management team, investors, and ecosystem partners. Nasdaq will livestream the ceremony beginning at 9:15 a.m. ET. The company has highlighted the occasion as recognition of its new identity and leadership as it pursues validator operations and further BNB treasury growth.

CZ’s short “double bells” post drew significant engagement, reflecting continued ecosystem attention to public-market BNB vehicles. BNB Standard positions itself as a transparent, disclosure-driven corporate holder in a sector where pure treasury companies have proliferated, while also signaling plans to develop operating activities on BNB Chain.

The developments illustrate the ongoing institutionalization of crypto assets through publicly traded vehicles, with leadership drawn from both traditional finance (Goldman Sachs) and crypto-native investment platforms (YZi Labs).
