Bitcoin Reclaims $81,000 and Closes Above Key 50-Week Moving Average

A weekly close is not a new cycle. It is the first one that looks like the last cycle’s floor.
Bitcoin finished the week ended September 20 at $81,159 on Coinbase, about 3% above its 50-week moving average near $78,788. It is the first weekly close over that line in 45 weeks — since November 9, 2025 — and the highest weekly close in four months. Spot then held the $81,000–$81,450 box through the weekend and printed as high as about $82,078 in early Monday Asia. The engine on Friday was a ~6% cash session that took the coin through $81,200 on short covering and a fat ETF print. Midweek it had been in the mid-$70,000s after CLARITY died and the Fed hiked. That is the same asset. Different week.
What Galaxy actually said
Alex Thorn, Galaxy Research’s head of firmwide research, has been writing this level since August. The 50-week average is the ceiling bears defend. Reclaim it on a weekly close and history treats the low as in. In four of five completed bear markets, the first upside break of the 50-week was after the final cycle low. Across 13 weekly reclaims since 2011, 11 were not followed by a new low. The two failures were both in 2021–2022 (late December 2021 and late March 2022). Thorn’s line this week: reclaiming the 50-week has historically been “strong confirmation that bear market lows are in.” Bitcoin is up about 29% in 35 days from the June area. Cycle low prints near $58,500 on June 30 were a ~53% drawdown from the October 2025 peak above $124,000. A close at $81,159 is a ~39% bounce off that floor. Joe Consorti and others put the historical “this was the bottom” hit rate near 75%. That is a base rate, not a promise. The 2021–22 exceptions exist so nobody gets to say “never.”
Flows: the week almost died
U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs were a wreck into Wednesday: −$450 million on the 15th (Clarity), −$296 million on the 16th (Fed). Thursday recovered some. Friday saved the week. Farside / SoSoValue put September 18 at about $433 million in — largest day since September 3 — led by Fidelity FBTC (~$311 million) and BlackRock IBIT (~$108 million). Ether products took in about $144 million the same session. Thursday-plus-Friday inflows near $593 million in one Bloomberg cut offset the early-week bleed and left the five-day net a rounding-error green, about $6 million. Category AUM is back around $102–$103 billion. Cumulative net inflows since launch still sit near $55 billion. That is not a new stampede. It is the bid returning at $81,000 after it went on strike at $80,000.
Positioning did some of the work
The Friday spike came with whale prints and a short-liquidation pulse. Analysts who will not bless a new bull market are not being stubborn. A squeeze plus one large FBTC day can produce a weekly close. Holding $81,000 through a full cash week, then clearing $82,000–$83,000 — the Glassnode-style cost-basis / options wall some desks mark toward $83,000–$86,000 — is the part that requires new longs, not just covering. The 200-week average is far below, near the mid-$65,000s. Price is ~24% over that slower line. Trend repair starts at the 50-week. It is confirmed above last month’s failed highs.
The contradiction that makes the close interesting
This reclaim happened after a unanimous Fed hike to 3.75–4.00%, after dots that still want another 25 bp in 2026, and after the Senate went 49–50 on CLARITY. The easy story was “macro and Congress win.” The tape printed $81,159 anyway. That is either the ETF bid asserting itself or a bear-market rally with a famous moving average attached. History’s 11-of-13 says lean toward the first. The two 2022 failures say do not retire the second.
$83,000 is the next sentence
A weekly close above the 50-week is the signal Thorn has been waiting on. It is not a breakout of the September range high near $82,300. Lose $78,800 on a weekly basis and this note gets filed with December 2021. Hold $81,000 and start printing daily closes through $83,000 and the “bottom is in” crowd gets to use the present tense. Until then it is a resilient recovery with a historically loud technical stamp — and a market that still has to prove $82,000 is a floor, not last Friday’s high.

Bitcoin Holds Above $84,000, Shrugging Off Heavy ETF Outflows as Oil Declines

Bitcoin rebounded to trade near or above $84,000 on Monday, October 12, 2026, recovering from earlier dips toward the low $83,000s and demonstrating resilience after the largest weekly outflows from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs since June.
According to CoinDesk and CoinGecko-linked data, the leading cryptocurrency traded near $84,050 after slipping to around $83,500 earlier in the session. It had closed the prior day in the roughly $83,600–$83,800 range with a modest daily gain, supported by a broader recovery in risk assets as oil prices eased.
U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $681 million in net outflows over the previous week (October 5–9), ending a three-week inflow streak and marking the heaviest weekly withdrawal since June, per SoSoValue and related flow data. Fidelity’s FBTC led the withdrawals with roughly $380 million, while products including BlackRock’s IBIT and ARK’s ARKB also saw substantial redemptions. Two heavy sessions—around $485–487 million on October 7 and $244 million on October 8—drove most of the selling, before a modest roughly $21 million inflow on October 9 helped stabilize flows.
Despite the institutional outflows, Bitcoin held key levels. Analysts pointed to $82,000 as important near-term support, with the recovery occurring even as total ETF assets stood near $105–106 billion. The price action suggested other buyers—potentially including longer-term holders or corporate treasuries—were absorbing supply.
Broader Market Gains and Macro Backdrop
The rebound extended across much of the top tier. Ethereum traded in the roughly $2,540–$2,565 range, while Solana, XRP, and Avalanche advanced, with Avalanche among the stronger performers in the major altcoins. Most of the top 10 assets posted gains on the day, though weekly performance for many remained mixed after earlier declines that had pushed Bitcoin toward $80,000–$81,000 lows amid surging oil and Treasury yields.
Falling oil prices provided a lift to risk assets. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures declined about 1.8% to near $90.28, reversing a Thursday spike that had injected uncertainty. The move followed President Donald Trump’s announcement of an agreement for Russia to supply 300,000 metric tons of diesel to international and domestic markets, alongside signs of eased geopolitical tensions related to energy and the Middle East. Brent crude remained elevated but softened from recent highs above $100–$105.
Elevated U.S. Treasury yields and a firm dollar continued as background pressures, keeping some investors cautious on non-yielding assets like Bitcoin. BTC dominance hovered in the 56–60% range depending on the data provider.
Whale Activity, Outlook, and Catalysts
On-chain and market reports indicated continued selective accumulation by large holders. Whales added roughly 15,000 BTC (valued near $1.2 billion) over a recent 72-hour window amid the prior sell-off, consistent with broader patterns of larger wallets adding exposure even as retail and some institutional flows were mixed. Corporate treasury buyers also remained active on a selective basis.
Attention now turns to upcoming U.S. inflation data, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) due around October 14. The print is widely viewed as the next major catalyst, with potential implications for Federal Reserve policy expectations ahead of the late-October FOMC meeting. A hotter-than-expected reading could renew pressure via yields and the dollar, while a softer print might support further risk-asset recovery.
Bitcoin’s ability to reclaim and hold the $84,000 area after the ETF outflow week and oil-driven volatility highlights relative strength in the spot market. However, resistance in the $85,000–$86,000 zone and ongoing sensitivity to macro factors—yields, energy prices, and inflation data—leave the near-term path dependent on whether buyers can sustain the recovery beyond the current rebound.
