BlackRock Files for “Buffer” Bitcoin ETF (Ticker: PBIT)

Published

on

BlackRock filed with the SEC on October 19, 2026, for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (proposed ticker PBIT). The product aims to deliver upside exposure to the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) or similar Bitcoin exposure up to an approximate limit, while seeking to provide a level of downside protection. It would typically target protection against the first roughly 10% of losses in exchange for capped gains.

The fund would not hold Bitcoin or IBIT shares directly. Instead, it would use options strategies—primarily buying and selling call options on IBIT or similar exposure—across three overlapping, staggered monthly tranches. Purchased calls are typically struck near 90% of the reference asset’s value at the start of each tranche to establish the initial loss floor (before fees). Sold higher-strike calls help fund the protection while setting a cap on gains. The structure also includes fixed-income components such as cash and short-term bonds. The filing notes that the floor and cap are not fixed and can vary, so investors should not expect a guaranteed outcome.

This is BlackRock’s third Bitcoin-related ETF filing, following the spot IBIT product and the later iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF. The filing coincided with IBIT’s strong inflow day, when the flagship fund drew roughly $665 million. Buffered or defined-outcome Bitcoin products already exist from other issuers such as Calamos, First Trust, and Innovator. BlackRock’s entry is expected to attract significant attention given the firm’s scale and IBIT’s dominant position among U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs. The registration is not an approval; the management fee and other key details remain blank in the preliminary filing.

Mastercard Advances AI Agent Payments

Published

on

Mastercard opened early access and demonstrated live transactions for its Agent Pay for Machines system. The platform allows AI agents to discover services, negotiate terms, and execute payments within human-defined spending limits and permissions. At Cloudflare Connect, the company demoed an AI agent running a sample ad campaign that completed nine payments to two merchants on a single approved budget, settling via partners including Coinbase, Base, and BVNK in fiat or stablecoins.

Built on the open x402 protocol (which uses the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response), the system relies on digitally signed “payment vouchers” that an agent generates when it encounters a paid service. A business sets the task and spending cap; the agent then operates within those bounds. Early access provides developers with the first buyer- and seller-side APIs, a toolkit, sandbox, and documentation. End-to-end pilots involved partners including Cloudflare, Ant International, AIsa, Base, BVNK, Coinbase, and Hype. The system supports high-frequency, low-value transactions across cards, bank accounts, and stablecoins.

The company also highlighted related work on stablecoin security risk scoring. Mastercard’s Stablecoin Security tool, unveiled around the same period at Money20/20, combines payment and blockchain intelligence to generate risk scores for fraud, scams, and sanctions exposure before funds move on-chain. Together, these efforts expand the infrastructure for machine-to-machine and autonomous agent commerce—an emerging narrative intersecting crypto, AI, and traditional payments. The focus remains on trust layers (identity, intent, controls, and execution) so agents can transact securely while humans retain authority.
