Mastercard Advances AI Agent Payments

Published

on

Mastercard opened early access and demonstrated live transactions for its Agent Pay for Machines system. The platform allows AI agents to discover services, negotiate terms, and execute payments within human-defined spending limits and permissions. At Cloudflare Connect, the company demoed an AI agent running a sample ad campaign that completed nine payments to two merchants on a single approved budget, settling via partners including Coinbase, Base, and BVNK in fiat or stablecoins.

Built on the open x402 protocol (which uses the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response), the system relies on digitally signed “payment vouchers” that an agent generates when it encounters a paid service. A business sets the task and spending cap; the agent then operates within those bounds. Early access provides developers with the first buyer- and seller-side APIs, a toolkit, sandbox, and documentation. End-to-end pilots involved partners including Cloudflare, Ant International, AIsa, Base, BVNK, Coinbase, and Hype. The system supports high-frequency, low-value transactions across cards, bank accounts, and stablecoins.

The company also highlighted related work on stablecoin security risk scoring. Mastercard’s Stablecoin Security tool, unveiled around the same period at Money20/20, combines payment and blockchain intelligence to generate risk scores for fraud, scams, and sanctions exposure before funds move on-chain. Together, these efforts expand the infrastructure for machine-to-machine and autonomous agent commerce—an emerging narrative intersecting crypto, AI, and traditional payments. The focus remains on trust layers (identity, intent, controls, and execution) so agents can transact securely while humans retain authority.

J.P. Morgan Asset Management included Bitcoin for the first time in its long-term capital market assumptions, projecting a 10% compound annual return over the next 10–15 years. The forecast appears in the firm’s 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions (LTCMA) report, released around October 19–20, 2026. The 10% base-case compound return ranks Bitcoin ahead of several traditional asset classes in the firm’s models, including U.S. large-cap stocks (7.5%), U.S. small-cap stocks (7.7%), U.S. REITs (8.2%), and gold (5.5%).

The report pairs the 10% compound figure with an arithmetic average return of 20.9% and an annualized volatility estimate of 55%. This gap reflects the impact of high volatility on long-term compounding. JPMorgan also outlined a wide range around the base case, with a bear scenario near –9.7% to –11.2% and a bull case around 16.6%–17%. The firm noted that Bitcoin’s volatility and unstable correlations with other assets remain obstacles to widespread portfolio inclusion and did not add it as a recommended allocation in its main models.

The inclusion in the 2027 LTCMA signals further institutional normalization. JPMorgan has previously expressed constructive views on Bitcoin relative to gold and equities in certain scenarios. Analysts described the step as significant because the LTCMA serves as a planning input for institutional allocators, even as the firm stopped short of recommending a formal allocation. The projections use a September 30, 2026, spot price reference near $83,000 and rest on factors including supply dynamics, gold complementarity, and network adoption effects.
