Record ETF Inflows and a Short Squeeze Drive Bitcoin’s $87,000 Break

Published

on

Two different buyers showed up on the same tape. Only one of them can be liquidated.

U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs printed $999 million of net creations on Monday, September 21 — Farside’s largest session of 2026 and the strongest day since October 6, 2025 (~$1.2 billion). In coin terms that is about 11,530 BTC, the biggest one-day wrapper absorption since November 2024. BlackRock’s IBIT led at $381.4 million. ARK 21Shares ARKB took $289.1 million. Fidelity FBTC added $238.8 million. Those three funds accounted for more than $909 million. Morgan Stanley MSBT ($61.7 million), Bitwise BITB ($21.6 million) and small Grayscale prints filled the rest. Every major product was green. That is not a single-issuer accident.

Ether products moved with them. Spot ether ETFs were cited around $270 million the same day — BlackRock ETHA ~$110 million, with Fidelity FETH and Grayscale Mini also in. Since September 17 the bitcoin wrappers have taken in about $1.59 billion across three sessions, reversing the −$746 million Clarity-and-Fed bleed of September 15–16. September month-to-date sits near +$1.3 billion. Cumulative net inflows since launch are back around $56 billion. The average ETF holder’s cost basis — $81,700–$82,200 in recent desk marks — is in the black for the first time since January. That is unlevered demand. It does not get a margin call at 3 a.m.

The other buyer was a short

While the wrappers were creating, the perp book was getting carried out. CoinGlass-style 24-hour liquidations ran $750 million to more than $1 billion, with shorts $650–$920 million of the total — 80%–85% short in the clean cuts. Bitcoin shorts alone were $360–$536 million; ether another $145–$190 million. One hour around the $84,000 break flushed $260 million-plus of shorts. Largest clips included an $11.3 million BTC-USDT on Binance and a larger Hyperliquid print in a later window. Glassnode had flagged $83,000–$86,000 as the crowded short band. Price walked through it. Perpetual open interest rebuilt toward $159–$160 billion, the highest since last October. That is how a Monday close near $81,200 becomes an eight-month high at $87,000–$87,374 before settling in the mid-$85,000s to low-$86,000s.

The feedback loop is textbook. Spot creations lift the cash print. Stops trigger. Forced buying lifts the next stop. OI that was rebuilt on the way up is dry powder for the way down. Analysts who liked the ETF print still marked the leverage as the reversal risk if $86,000 fails.

Why the two flows are not the same story

ETF demand is the bid that held after the squeeze cooled. Liquidations explain the speed. Creations explain why the market cap could reclaim $3 trillion and why bitcoin’s own cap sat near $1.73 trillion instead of giving it all back Tuesday. Strategy’s 950 BTC cash add in the prior week sits in the same unlevered bucket as IBIT. Crowded shorts sit in the other.

The week that started with a Senate cloture fail and a Fed hike ended with the fattest ETF day in eleven months and a short massacre. Those facts can both be true. They do not stay true if oil and the 10-year remember themselves, or if the $160 billion OI book meets a down day. $999 million of wrappers is the structural sentence. $900 million of dead shorts is the tactical one. Trade them separately.

Spot bitcoin ETFs flip to a ~$487 million outflow

Published

on

Tuesday’s US spot bitcoin ETFs took in about $119 million, the fourth inflow in five sessions. Wednesday reversed that. SoSoValue-linked reports put net outflows at $487 million, the largest day since 25 June on one compilation, at $484.9 million. BlackRock’s IBIT led with about $208 million, Fidelity’s FBTC with about $105 million, then ARKB at about $102 million, GBTC at about $39 million, BITB at about $28 million and HODL at about $3.5 million.

The day before had looked like the thin bid was stabilizing. Creations in the week ended 2 October had already fallen to the low hundreds of millions, with IBIT the main buyer and FBTC the fund seeing outflows. Tuesday’s $119 million fit that pattern. Wednesday did not. IBIT, the fund that had been absorbing shares while others leaked, led the redemption. That is a different tape from a rotation inside the complex. It is the complex selling.

The stock is still large: about $107.4 billion in net assets, roughly 6.41% of bitcoin’s market cap, and $57.3 billion of cumulative net inflows. A one-day redemption does not unwind that base. It does remove the marginal buyer on the day the range broke. Bitcoin closed at $83,275.93, down 2.67%, after trading near $86,600 a day earlier and printing a Bloomberg low near $82,759. The post-breakout band of roughly $83,000–$87,000 was tested from underneath on the same session the creations flipped.

Ether funds had already been bleeding. US spot ether ETFs logged about $202 million of outflows on Tuesday, a six-session streak near $408 million, while bitcoin funds were still taking in cash. Wednesday closed that gap from the other side. Ether finished at $2,573.53, down 4.60%. The base asset and the beta asset redeemed together into a Hormuz shock that had Brent above $101 and the 10-year near a 24-year high.

For the range, the flow number is the one that matters more than the oil headline. A reclaim of $85,500 was the resistance that would restore the band. That reclaim needs a buyer. A $487 million outflow is the opposite print, and it landed on the day $84,000 failed. If Thursday’s creations do not flip back, $81,000 is the figure CoinMarketCap’s desk already flagged, and the cumulative $57.3 billion does not trade against it. The stock is the base. The daily creation is the bid. Wednesday took the bid off.
