Ripple Secures Final OCC Approval for National Trust Bank to Oversee RLUSD

Published

on

SAN FRANCISCO / WASHINGTON — October 26, 2026 — Ripple received final approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) to establish Ripple National Trust Bank (RNTB), a federally supervised national trust bank. The charter allows the new entity to manage segregated reserves backing Ripple USD (RLUSD), act as collateral trustee for RLUSD holders, and provide fiduciary digital-asset custody services to institutional clients.

The approval completes a process that began with conditional OCC approval in December 2025. RLUSD, which launched in December 2024, has grown to roughly $2.5–$2.6 billion in market capitalization according to company figures and CoinGecko. Issuance of the stablecoin remains with Standard Custody & Trust Company, Ripple’s New York Department of Financial Services-regulated limited-purpose trust company. Reserve management and custody now fall under federal OCC oversight, creating a dual state-and-federal structure that adds regulatory clarity without changing the existing issuance model. BNY continues to serve as the primary reserve custodian, and Ripple publishes monthly third-party attestations of circulating supply and reserve assets.

CEO Brad Garlinghouse said the approval shows “crypto and banks work better together,” describing it as real innovation paired with accountability and federal supervision. He added that the development places the company more firmly inside the regulated financial system rather than outside it. The national trust bank charter does not permit deposit-taking or lending; it is limited to fiduciary and custody activities.

Context and market reaction
The move follows the GENIUS Act and places Ripple alongside other crypto firms that have sought regulated banking charters. Circle previously received final OCC approval for its own national trust bank; several other firms remain at the conditional stage. Market reaction was muted. XRP traded near $1.29–$1.31 around the announcement, with only modest daily gains reported in some trackers.

Outlook
The dual regulatory structure strengthens RLUSD’s institutional positioning for payments, collateral, and custody use cases while preserving the New York-regulated issuance framework. Ripple has not yet announced an opening date for RNTB and will continue working with regulators as the bank becomes operational. The approval reinforces the broader trend of digital-asset companies embedding within traditional banking frameworks under federal supervision.

Aviva Investors Tokenizes £22 Billion

Published

on

LONDON — October 26, 2026 — Aviva Investors, the asset-management arm of UK insurer Aviva, launched a tokenized share class of its £22 billion (approximately $29 billion) Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger in partnership with Ripple. Aviva itself invested £50 million ($66 million) in the new class.

The structure uses a “digital twin” model. Investor holdings are represented on-chain on the XRP Ledger, while the underlying Ireland-domiciled UCITS money-market fund continues to operate off-chain. Assets remain held by the existing custodian, The Bank of New York Mellon. Investors in the tokenized share class receive the same investment objective, risk profile, liquidity characteristics, and regulatory protections as holders of the conventional fund, which was first launched in 2002. The fund invests in high-grade, sterling-denominated short-term debt instruments and offers daily liquidity.

This is Aviva Investors’ second tokenized money-market offering on XRPL. It follows a tokenized share class of its USD Liquidity Fund launched in July 2026, which received approval from the Central Bank of Ireland. Combined investment across the two tokenized share classes now exceeds £86 million ($116 million). The new launch positions Aviva among Europe’s larger providers of tokenized money-market funds and expands institutional access to the existing product through blockchain rails. Eligible investors with digital wallets can access the tokenized class; Komainu provided regulated digital-asset custody support and Licuido supplied tokenization infrastructure.

Significance
The £22 billion figure refers to the total assets of the Sterling Liquidity Fund across all share classes, not the amount newly placed on-chain. Tokenization creates a digital access layer and ownership record rather than migrating the underlying portfolio onto the ledger. The approach preserves the regulated fund structure while adding on-chain representation, settlement features, and potential operational efficiencies.

Outlook
The launch extends Aviva’s partnership with Ripple, first announced earlier in 2026, and demonstrates growing institutional use of public blockchain infrastructure for regulated fund products. Tokenized money-market funds continue to serve as an early adoption path for real-world asset tokenization, particularly where daily liquidity and collateral use cases are relevant. Aviva Investors CEO Mark Versey has said tokenized funds can increase efficiency and improve client outcomes. Further growth will depend on investor uptake beyond the firm’s own seed investment and broader market development of on-chain fund distribution.
