Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day! The Most Expensive Meal in Human History Turns 16 Today

Published

on

May 22, 2026 — Welcome to the tastiest, most regret-inducing, and strangely wholesome holiday in all of cryptocurrency: Bitcoin Pizza Day.

Sixteen years ago today, a brave (or extremely hungry) man named Laszlo Hanyecz did what no one had done before: he used Bitcoin for an actual, real-world purchase. He posted on the Bitcoin forum offering 10,000 BTC for two Papa John’s pizzas. Someone took the deal. History was made. And Laszlo became the patron saint of “I spent my Bitcoin on dumb stuff.”

The Legendary Transaction That Broke the Internet (Years Later)

On May 22, 2010, Bitcoin was trading at basically nothing. Laszlo, a Florida programmer, was tired of waiting for someone to actually use this weird internet money. So he made an offer that will live in infamy:

“I’ll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas… like maybe two large ones so I have some left over for the next day.”

A guy named Jeremy Sturdivant (jercos) accepted, ordered the pizzas, and delivered the receipt. Laszlo got his pepperoni and cheese. The rest is delicious, cheesy legend.

Those two pizzas cost $41 back then. Today? Those same 10,000 BTC are worth roughly $770 million.

Yes. Million. With an M.

Laszlo’s Current Mood: Surprisingly Chill

Here’s the funniest part: Laszlo has repeatedly said he doesn’t regret it. In interviews, he’s been seen smiling, eating pizza, and living a normal life. The man is a legend. He didn’t just buy pizza — he bought permanent main character status in crypto lore.

Meanwhile, the rest of us stare at our portfolios and whisper, “I sold at $600…”

If Only We Had a Time Machine…

Imagine if you could go back in time with today’s knowledge:

  • You: “Laszlo, bro, keep the pizzas. I’ll Venmo you $50.”
  • Laszlo: “Nah, I’m craving pizza right now.”
  • You: quietly sobbing while watching Bitcoin hit $100k

Or better yet — picture all the people who received free Bitcoin in 2010 and spent it on pizza, energy drinks, or Steam games. Somewhere out there is a guy who bought a gaming chair with 500 BTC.

How the Crypto World Celebrates Today

Every May 22nd, the internet turns into one giant pizza party:

  • Exchanges offer pizza discounts paid in BTC
  • Memecoins pump purely on vibes
  • People post their “Pizza Day portfolios” (mostly just sad screenshots)
  • Someone inevitably says “This is financial advice” while ordering Domino’s

The Real Lesson (Between the Cheese Pulls)

Bitcoin Pizza Day isn’t really about the pizzas. It’s about the journey from “worthless internet tokens” to a global asset class worth trillions.

It’s a reminder that Bitcoin went from being used to buy lunch… to becoming the lunch.

Final Slice of Wisdom

So today, order yourself a pizza. Pay with Bitcoin if you can. Take a moment to laugh at how absurd this all is.

Because 16 years ago, someone paid what is now nearly a billion dollars for two pizzas… and we’re all still celebrating it.

Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day, you beautiful degens.

Now go forth and HODL responsibly (but maybe treat yourself to extra cheese today).

Strategy (MicroStrategy) Adds 250 Bitcoin, Holdings Reach 848,250 BTC

Published

on

Strategy, Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR), the company led by Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, acquired an additional 250 bitcoin for approximately $21.5 million between October 5 and October 11, 2026, at an average price of $86,194 per coin (including fees and expenses). The purchase brings the firm’s total holdings to 848,250 BTC.

The company funded the acquisition primarily through net proceeds of about $21 million from at-the-market sales of 125,183 shares of its Class A common stock (MSTR), with the remaining roughly $0.5 million drawn from its USD cash balance. No preferred stock was sold during the period. Strategy’s cumulative bitcoin investment now stands at roughly $64 billion, acquired at an average cost basis of approximately $75,444 per coin. At recent market prices, the holdings represent more than 4% of Bitcoin’s fixed 21 million supply cap and carry substantial unrealized gains.

In the same weekly update, Strategy reported repurchasing 1,932,145 shares of its STRC preferred stock (Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock) for an aggregate of about $192.4 million. The company maintains a large USD reserve—previously reported near $4.88–$5.5 billion—to support preferred stock dividends and interest payments on outstanding debt. Additional cash balances remain available for treasury activities, including further bitcoin purchases.

Saylor highlighted the latest acquisition on X with the familiar phrase “There’s always room for more orange,” continuing his long-running pattern of signaling accumulation. Strategy remains the largest publicly traded corporate holder of bitcoin. The move occurred against a backdrop of elevated volatility, with bitcoin trading in the roughly $81,000–$84,000 range around October 12 after earlier strength above $84,000.

The latest purchase marks continued, if more modest, weekly accumulation following larger buys in prior weeks. Strategy has paired ongoing bitcoin treasury expansion with active capital management, including preferred-stock repurchases, while relying on equity issuance and existing cash reserves to fund purchases.
