Bitcoin Plunges Below $83,000 Amid Massive Sell-Off and Liquidations

Published

on

In a dramatic escalation of recent market weakness, Bitcoin (BTC) plunged as much as 7% on January 30, 2026, briefly dipping below $83,000 and hitting a low near $81,000 before partially recovering to trade around $82,000–$82,500 in late trading. The sharp decline erased virtually all gains posted earlier in the year, pushing BTC to its lowest levels since November 2025 and marking one of the most severe single-day drops of 2026 so far.

The sell-off was fueled by aggressive deleveraging in futures markets, where overleveraged long positions were forcibly closed amid cascading liquidations. Data from Coinglass and other trackers showed total crypto liquidations surging to approximately $1.68 billion in the past 24 hours, with long positions accounting for the vast majority — roughly $1.574 billion to $1.59 billion. More than 270,000 traders were affected, highlighting the extent of crowded bullish bets that had built up during prior consolidation.

Bitcoin itself saw liquidations exceeding $780 million, while Ethereum (ETH) contributed over $400 million as it fell sharply to around $2,755–$2,800, down more than 6–7% on the day. The broader crypto market cap slipped below $3 trillion, reflecting a roughly 5–6% drop in a single session amid a full risk-off environment.

Triggers Behind the Rout

Analysts point to a confluence of factors amplifying the downside:

  • Futures deleveraging and leverage flush: High open interest in leveraged positions unraveled rapidly as price breached key supports like $84,000–$86,000, triggering margin calls and forced sales.
  • Broader market contagion: A flash crash in gold (which had been at record highs) and sharp declines in tech stocks — including a notable Microsoft sell-off — spilled over into crypto, underscoring its sensitivity to risk asset rotations.
  • Macro and institutional pressures: Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded heavy outflows (around $818 million in some reports), signaling institutional fatigue. Heightened geopolitical tensions and uncertainty around future Federal Reserve leadership contributed to a firmer U.S. dollar and reduced appetite for high-beta assets.
  • Lack of fresh inflows: With no major positive catalysts and persistent macro headwinds, the market lacked buying support to absorb selling pressure.

The Fear & Greed Index plunged into extreme fear territory (around 16 in some readings), reflecting widespread risk aversion.

Market Impact and Broader Sentiment

U.S.-listed crypto-related stocks felt the pain acutely, with companies like MicroStrategy (often referred to in strategy contexts) and others seeing declines of nearly 10%. Altcoins broadly underperformed, with many posting steeper losses than Bitcoin.

Despite the severity, some market observers view this as a healthy — if painful — consolidation phase. The flush of excessive leverage could clear out weak hands, potentially setting the stage for more sustainable upside if macro conditions stabilize. Bitcoin’s role as a potential hedge against long-term monetary pressures and dollar debasement narratives remains intact for proponents, though near-term sentiment is decidedly bearish.

What to Watch Next

Investors are now laser-focused on upcoming Federal Reserve signals, including any clarity on policy direction or leadership changes, which could provide recovery cues. Key technical supports sit near $80,000–$81,000 (November lows), with analysts warning of further downside toward $75,000 or even lower if selling persists. Resistance overhead remains formidable around $84,000–$86,000.

This latest volatility serves as a stark reminder of crypto’s high-beta nature in uncertain macro regimes. While the post-2024 bull narrative has faced repeated tests in 2026, the sector’s resilience through prior cycles suggests this could be another shakeout rather than a structural top — though caution prevails until fresh catalysts emerge.

Strategy (MicroStrategy) Adds 250 Bitcoin, Holdings Reach 848,250 BTC

Published

on

Strategy, Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR), the company led by Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, acquired an additional 250 bitcoin for approximately $21.5 million between October 5 and October 11, 2026, at an average price of $86,194 per coin (including fees and expenses). The purchase brings the firm’s total holdings to 848,250 BTC.

The company funded the acquisition primarily through net proceeds of about $21 million from at-the-market sales of 125,183 shares of its Class A common stock (MSTR), with the remaining roughly $0.5 million drawn from its USD cash balance. No preferred stock was sold during the period. Strategy’s cumulative bitcoin investment now stands at roughly $64 billion, acquired at an average cost basis of approximately $75,444 per coin. At recent market prices, the holdings represent more than 4% of Bitcoin’s fixed 21 million supply cap and carry substantial unrealized gains.

In the same weekly update, Strategy reported repurchasing 1,932,145 shares of its STRC preferred stock (Variable Rate Series A Perpetual Stretch Preferred Stock) for an aggregate of about $192.4 million. The company maintains a large USD reserve—previously reported near $4.88–$5.5 billion—to support preferred stock dividends and interest payments on outstanding debt. Additional cash balances remain available for treasury activities, including further bitcoin purchases.

Saylor highlighted the latest acquisition on X with the familiar phrase “There’s always room for more orange,” continuing his long-running pattern of signaling accumulation. Strategy remains the largest publicly traded corporate holder of bitcoin. The move occurred against a backdrop of elevated volatility, with bitcoin trading in the roughly $81,000–$84,000 range around October 12 after earlier strength above $84,000.

The latest purchase marks continued, if more modest, weekly accumulation following larger buys in prior weeks. Strategy has paired ongoing bitcoin treasury expansion with active capital management, including preferred-stock repurchases, while relying on equity issuance and existing cash reserves to fund purchases.
