Bitcoin Rebounds Above $82,000 as China GDP Beats Estimates and Nasdaq Futures Recover; DeFi Leads Altcoin Gains

Published

on

Bitcoin extended a rebound above the $82,000 level on October 19, 2026, recovering from a weekend dip near $80,700, as improved risk sentiment from equities and stronger-than-expected Chinese economic data supported crypto markets. China’s third-quarter GDP growth came in at 4.5% year-over-year, up from 4.3% in the prior quarter and above the 4.4% consensus, alongside solid retail sales figures that exceeded expectations. This helped lift Asian equities and Nasdaq 100 futures, which rose more than 1% in early trading, while lower oil prices added further support for risk assets.

BTC traded around $82,500–$82,700 at various points during the session and briefly approached $83,000, with later readings near $82,900. The broader CoinDesk 80 index of liquid altcoins gained roughly 0.9–1.3%, outpacing the bitcoin-heavy CoinDesk 5. Ethereum added about 0.3–0.75% to the $2,420–$2,430 area. DeFi tokens led the advance, with Uniswap, Lido, and Ethena posting gains. Arbitrum rose sharply, with reports of 6.7–9.5% or more, following the Arbitrum Foundation’s Stablecoin Growth Program. The initiative allocates a 2 million ARB prize pool for the first teams reaching a 30-day average of $10 million in USDG TVL on Arbitrum, alongside other incentives for protocols adopting USDG as a primary stablecoin.

The move followed a brief break below $80,000 earlier in the week and occurred against a backdrop of elevated but orderly liquidations (around $221 million across major venues in one 24-hour window, with shorts contributing to the rebound). Analysts noted the recovery aligned with fading prior “Black Monday” concerns, selective institutional activity, and broader macro support from the China data and equity futures. Weekly performance remained mixed for many majors, and U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF outflows of roughly $228 million the prior week continued to temper some sentiment.

The session underscored crypto’s ongoing sensitivity to macro catalysts even as institutional adoption advances. Support near the early-week lows held, but further data releases and the late-October Federal Reserve decision remain key near-term variables.

Mt. Gox Extends Creditor Repayment Deadline to October 2027

Published

on

The rehabilitation trustee for the collapsed Mt. Gox exchange pushed the creditor repayment deadline to October 31, 2027, with Tokyo court approval. A notice dated October 16 from trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi extended the previous October 31, 2026 deadline by one year. Many creditors have still not completed the required procedures, while others have encountered processing issues that prevented payments.

Base repayments, early lump-sum repayments, and intermediate repayments have largely been completed for eligible creditors who finished the necessary steps and experienced no problems. The extension covers these three repayment categories under the rehabilitation plan. This is the fourth annual one-year extension since the original 2023 deadline. Repayments began in July 2024 through intermediaries including Kraken, Bitstamp, and BitGo, with more than 19,500 creditors reported as having received distributions by March 2025.

Wallets linked to the estate continue to hold approximately 34,388 BTC (roughly $2.8 billion at current prices), according to blockchain analytics data. The remaining balance has been relatively stable in recent months, with no major transfers reported since June. Analysts view the outstanding supply as limited relative to today’s Bitcoin liquidity and trading volumes, and no longer a major market overhang compared with earlier stages of the process when larger amounts were still pending.

The original rehabilitation plan covered roughly 142,000 BTC, 143,000 BCH, and ¥69 billion in cash. The latest delay provides additional time to complete remaining distributions where practicable, further postponing any potential incremental supply from the estate.
