Stablecoin Issuers and Partners Freeze Billions Linked to Binance Incident

Published

on

Stablecoin issuers and blockchain partners moved rapidly to freeze billions of dollars in assets tied to the Binance security incident of October 29, 2026, limiting the liquidity available to attackers after an estimated $6.3 billion left the exchange’s hot wallets.

Tether and Circle acted within hours. Tether froze approximately $1.57 billion in USDT, while Circle froze more than $800 million in USDC. Together these two freezes accounted for the majority of the recoverable portion. Additional freezes by Ripple, World Liberty Financial, Arbitrum’s Security Council, and other partners pushed the verified total of frozen or restricted assets into the roughly $2.7–3 billion range, according to Binance and analytics firms including TRM Labs, Chainalysis, and Arkham.

Binance stated that it worked directly with blockchain partners to identify and freeze affected assets on-chain, and that it had engaged law enforcement. Roughly $3 billion had been frozen by early October 30. The remaining funds—primarily Bitcoin (including about 18,270 BTC) and Ethereum—cannot be frozen by issuers and remain under attacker control for now. Attackers also raced to swap or move some stablecoins through decentralized platforms before freezes took effect.

The episode illustrated two contrasting features of the crypto ecosystem. Public blockchains provided near-real-time visibility into the flows, allowing analytics firms and issuers to track and act on the transfers within minutes. At the same time, the centralized nature of major stablecoins gave Tether, Circle, and others the ability to blacklist addresses and halt movement of USDT and USDC—actions that are not possible with native assets such as BTC or ETH.

These freezes reduced the immediate liquidity impact of the theft and gave Binance and its partners a clearer path to recovery. The exchange has said it will cover all remaining losses from its SAFU fund and corporate reserves, and that user funds are safe. The incident remains under investigation, with attribution by TRM Labs and Chainalysis pointing with high confidence to North Korea’s TraderTraitor unit. Figures may continue to update as additional assets are identified or recovered.

Bitcoin Slides Below $78,000 as Risk-Off Sentiment Intensifies

Published

Bitcoin fell below $78,000 on October 30, 2026, as confirmation of the Binance security incident accelerated a broader risk-off move across crypto markets.

On CoinMarketCap, Bitcoin traded at $78,430 with a market capitalization of approximately $1.57 trillion, down roughly 2% over the prior 24 hours and more sharply from earlier levels near $81,000–$82,000. The decline pushed BTC to its weakest levels in more than a month, with some reports showing brief tests of the mid-$76,000s during the sharpest phase of the sell-off.

The drop intensified after Binance disclosed the estimated $6.3 billion hot-wallet breach late on October 29. Leveraged liquidations amplified the move, with figures ranging from hundreds of millions to more than $1 billion in 24-hour windows depending on the snapshot and venue. Broader risk aversion linked to technology-stock weakness and a hawkish tone from the Federal Reserve added to the pressure.

Bitcoin dominance remained elevated, indicating that capital was rotating out of higher-beta assets rather than exiting the crypto market entirely. Analysts highlighted key support clusters in the $77,000–$79,000 range, while resistance stayed firm above $81,000–$85,000. The incident’s market impact is still unfolding as investigations continue and further details on frozen assets and potential recoveries emerge.
