Federal Reserve Holds Rates Steady as Bitcoin Trades Near $80,000; December Hike Odds Rise

Published

on

The Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged on October 28, 2026, holding the federal funds target range at 3.75% to 4.00% in a 10-2 vote. Bitcoin showed limited immediate reaction, trading near $80,800–$81,200 around the announcement before some later softness, as markets focused on a more hawkish tone and elevated odds of a December hike.

The decision paused further tightening after the Fed’s quarter-point increase in September—the first hike since 2023, which had passed unanimously. Two officials dissented in favor of another 25-basis-point rise: Fed Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack. This marked a rare joint dissent by a governor and a regional bank president on the same side of a rate decision. The Fed’s statement described economic activity as expanding at a “strong” pace, an upgrade from “solid” in September, while noting that inflation remains elevated and that additional information will guide the policy stance.

Bitcoin and market reaction
Bitcoin’s response was muted and consistent with high pre-meeting expectations of a hold (around 90% on CME FedWatch). The price edged up roughly 0.2% immediately after the 2 p.m. ET announcement to near $80,950, briefly tested levels around $81,100–$81,700 during Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference, and later gave back some gains. By the following session, BTC had slipped toward the high $79,000s to low $80,000s in some reports, with broader crypto liquidations remaining relatively contained. Ether and other major altcoins showed similar modest moves. Spot Bitcoin ETFs saw modest inflows in some data, providing a partial cushion.

Hawkish undertones and December outlook
Markets interpreted the combination of the hold, the two dissents, the upgraded growth language, and Warsh’s emphasis on unfinished inflation work as leaving a December hike firmly on the table. CME FedWatch probabilities for a quarter-point increase at the December 8–9 meeting rose into the mid-to-high 70% or low 80% range in various trackers after the decision. Warsh noted that inflation has run above the 2% target for nearly six years and reiterated the Fed’s responsibility to restore price stability. He has previously indicated limited use of forward guidance outside of crises.

Higher-for-longer rates raise the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as Bitcoin, as short-term Treasuries offer returns near 4%. Analysts noted that the hold itself was largely priced in, but the hawkish messaging and rising December hike odds could sustain pressure on risk assets if yields and the dollar firm further. Upcoming data—including PCE inflation, GDP, and the next employment report—will shape the path into the December meeting.

Outlook
The October decision removes immediate tightening risk for this meeting but keeps restrictive policy in place and increases the market-implied probability of another hike before year-end. Bitcoin’s relatively calm reaction reflects the anticipated hold, yet the shift in December pricing and persistent inflation concerns leave the macro backdrop cautious for crypto. Traders will watch Treasury yields, the dollar, and incoming inflation data for clearer signals on whether the next move pressures or supports risk assets.

Bitcoin Slides Below $78,000 as Risk-Off Sentiment Intensifies

Published

on

Bitcoin fell below $78,000 on October 30, 2026, as confirmation of the Binance security incident accelerated a broader risk-off move across crypto markets.

On CoinMarketCap, Bitcoin traded at $78,430 with a market capitalization of approximately $1.57 trillion, down roughly 2% over the prior 24 hours and more sharply from earlier levels near $81,000–$82,000. The decline pushed BTC to its weakest levels in more than a month, with some reports showing brief tests of the mid-$76,000s during the sharpest phase of the sell-off.

The drop intensified after Binance disclosed the estimated $6.3 billion hot-wallet breach late on October 29. Leveraged liquidations amplified the move, with figures ranging from hundreds of millions to more than $1 billion in 24-hour windows depending on the snapshot and venue. Broader risk aversion linked to technology-stock weakness and a hawkish tone from the Federal Reserve added to the pressure.

Bitcoin dominance remained elevated, indicating that capital was rotating out of higher-beta assets rather than exiting the crypto market entirely. Analysts highlighted key support clusters in the $77,000–$79,000 range, while resistance stayed firm above $81,000–$85,000. The incident’s market impact is still unfolding as investigations continue and further details on frozen assets and potential recoveries emerge.
