Stablecoin Remittances Shown 84% Cheaper Than Traditional Bank Transfers

Analysis published around October 17, 2026, indicated that stablecoin-based remittances can be approximately 84% cheaper than traditional bank transfers in certain comparisons. The finding comes from Borderless.xyz’s third-quarter 2026 report, which put the median cost of stablecoin-funded remittances at 1%—or about $2 on a $200 transfer—versus a 6.36% benchmark ($12.72) drawn from the World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide data for the third quarter of 2025. The gap equates to roughly 84% savings on that example, though the comparison uses datasets from different periods and mixes a median with an average.
Regional figures in the report showed similar advantages. In Sub-Saharan Africa, stablecoin-funded remittances carried a 2.9% cost versus 8.46% for traditional transfers. In Latin America, the figures were 1.25% and 5.64%, respectively. For larger business payments, a $10,000 stablecoin-funded transfer to the eurozone cost as little as $26 through the lowest-priced provider, compared with estimates of $135–$150 for conventional international wires (including fees and an assumed foreign-exchange margin). Settlement on local rails such as Brazil’s PIX or Mexico’s SPEI was often measured in minutes rather than the next business day typical of many bank transfers.
USDC and USDT remain the dominant instruments in these flows. As of the October 17 CoinMarketCap snapshot, USDC had a market capitalization of about $72.53 billion and USDT roughly $183.43 billion, supporting expanding infrastructure for lower-cost transfers. Cost advantages, however, depend on the specific corridor, liquidity, on- and off-ramp fees, and provider. Payout completion rates in the Borderless data varied widely—from 73% in Costa Rica to 98.6% in Mexico—indicating that lower headline fees do not always guarantee uniform reliability. Independent tests, such as one by the Bank of Italy, have also shown end-to-end stablecoin costs ranging from under 1% to nearly 9% depending on the route, underscoring that real-world savings can be narrower than the headline comparison.
The data aligns with broader trends of stablecoins capturing a growing share of cross-border value transfer, particularly where traditional rails are slow or expensive. While the 84% figure highlights potential efficiency gains, outcomes remain corridor- and implementation-specific as the infrastructure continues to mature.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Spot ETFs Record Substantial Weekly Outflows

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $228.4 million in net outflows over the five sessions ending October 16, 2026, while spot Ethereum ETFs saw larger withdrawals of about $320.1 million. Combined, the two categories lost approximately $548.5 million for the week, according to Farside Investors data aggregated by multiple outlets. BlackRock’s products led the outflows: its iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) accounted for roughly $165 million of the Bitcoin total, while its iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) drove nearly $299 million—about 93%—of the Ethereum withdrawals.
Daily flows were uneven. Bitcoin ETFs saw a $65.4 million outflow on October 12, a $175.7 million inflow on October 13, a heavy $261.4 million outflow on October 14, a small $5.1 million inflow on October 15, and an $82.4 million outflow on October 16. Ethereum funds recorded outflows on four of the five days, with only a modest Tuesday inflow. Across a broader set of crypto ETFs (including Solana, Zcash, and Hyperliquid products), total weekly outflows reached about $610–$611 million, down from roughly $1.29 billion the prior week.
Bitcoin held near $81,200–$81,400 into the weekend despite the flows, with its market capitalization remaining above $1.63 trillion. ETF flows have served as a key sentiment gauge since the products launched. Persistent outflows can reduce near-term institutional demand and add pressure on prices, though the latest weekly figure for Bitcoin products was smaller than the prior week’s larger bleed. Traders noted that liquidations stayed moderate and that outflows had moderated relative to earlier October sessions in some datasets.
These developments reflect the primary ETF-related headlines circulating across major crypto outlets on October 17–18, 2026. All price and market-cap figures referenced for the prior period are drawn from contemporaneous reporting and CoinMarketCap snapshots. Market conditions can change rapidly; data should be verified against live sources for trading decisions.
