South Korea Blocks Domestic Access to 27 Unregistered Crypto Exchange Websites, Including KuCoin and MEXC

Published

on

South Korea’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), under the Financial Services Commission, announced on October 13, 2026, that domestic access would be blocked—or services terminated—for the websites of 27 unregistered virtual asset service providers. The list includes major offshore platforms such as KuCoin, MEXC, Phemex, XT.com, Bitrue, CoinW, Poloniex, BTCC, BingX, BitMart, DigiFinex, and others.

The decision followed reviews by the Korea Communications Standards Commission on October 6 and 7. It expands prior restrictions that already limited new downloads, installations, and updates of related apps on Apple’s App Store and Google Play. Operators with servers or management based in South Korea face service termination, while those based overseas face access blocks. Authorities indicated they will monitor and block alternative URLs that platforms may use to continue operating.

Under the Act on Reporting and Using Specified Financial Transaction Information, virtual asset service providers must obtain Information Security Management System (ISMS) certification and register with the FIU to operate legally in South Korea. Unregistered operators that target Korean users—through Korean-language interfaces, local marketing, or support for Korean won (KRW) transactions—violate the law. Penalties can reach up to five years in prison or a fine of 50 million won. The FIU has referred a cumulative 44 unregistered operators to investigative authorities. Only about 27–28 virtual asset businesses are currently lawfully registered.

The FIU framed the website blocks as a proactive measure to prevent user harm, money laundering, and the use of platforms for concealing criminal proceeds before specific victim complaints arise. Unregistered operators lack government oversight of anti-money laundering systems and user asset protections, raising risks of data leaks, hacks, and fraud. Registered exchanges have also been instructed not to facilitate transfers of virtual assets to unregistered platforms, and restrictions on credit-card purchases through such operators have been in place since 2024.

Authorities acknowledged that the website blocks could complicate withdrawals for existing users. Guidance for affected users is expected through the Digital Asset Exchange Association (DAXA), the industry body of registered Korean exchanges. The action forms part of a broader enforcement push against offshore platforms serving Korean nationals without proper registration and ISMS certification, shifting from app-store limits to broader web-level restrictions.

Bitcoin Drops Below $81,000 as Hotter U.S. CPI Revives Rate-Hike Fears and Asian Equities Tumble

Published

on

Bitcoin fell sharply below $81,000 in early Asian trading on October 15, 2026, extending losses after a hotter-than-expected U.S. September CPI report. Headline inflation rose to 3.7% year-over-year versus forecasts near 3.6% (and up from 3.4% in August), with core CPI also firming to 2.6%. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% on the month and accounted for more than half of the headline increase, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The print prompted traders to reprice the probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase at the late-October meeting, with odds briefly spiking near 50% before moderating toward the mid-20% to 30% range on some platforms.

The macro shock hit risk assets broadly. South Korea’s Kospi plunged as much as 7.5–8% in morning trade, with major chip stocks leading declines, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell around 5%. Bitcoin traded near $80,764 (down roughly 3.6% over 24 hours in some reports), with intraday lows near $80,400–$80,580. Ether fell more sharply, around 6.5% to near $2,353. Solana and XRP each shed roughly 4–5%, and Zcash underperformed among major assets. Liquidations across major venues reached hundreds of millions of dollars, predominantly long positions.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of roughly $150–$261 million on October 14 (sources varied between about $150.5 million and $261 million), reversing prior inflows and underscoring fragile institutional demand after the previous week’s roughly $681 million in redemptions. Total Bitcoin ETF net assets remained near $105 billion.

Analysts noted that the stronger inflation data reinforced “higher-for-longer” rate concerns, weighing on liquidity and risk appetite. Bitcoin’s correlation with equities remained elevated amid the Asian selloff. While some traders eyed support near $80,000–$81,300, the combination of macro data, ETF flows, and regional equity weakness kept sentiment defensive heading into further U.S. releases (PPI, retail sales, Beige Book) and the Fed’s October 27–28 decision window. The September CPI was the last major inflation reading before that meeting, following the Fed’s September hike to a 3.75%–4.00% target range.
