Bitcoin Drops Below $81,000 as Hotter U.S. CPI Revives Rate-Hike Fears and Asian Equities Tumble

Published

on

Bitcoin fell sharply below $81,000 in early Asian trading on October 15, 2026, extending losses after a hotter-than-expected U.S. September CPI report. Headline inflation rose to 3.7% year-over-year versus forecasts near 3.6% (and up from 3.4% in August), with core CPI also firming to 2.6%. Gasoline prices jumped 9.1% on the month and accounted for more than half of the headline increase, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The print prompted traders to reprice the probability of a Federal Reserve rate increase at the late-October meeting, with odds briefly spiking near 50% before moderating toward the mid-20% to 30% range on some platforms.

The macro shock hit risk assets broadly. South Korea’s Kospi plunged as much as 7.5–8% in morning trade, with major chip stocks leading declines, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell around 5%. Bitcoin traded near $80,764 (down roughly 3.6% over 24 hours in some reports), with intraday lows near $80,400–$80,580. Ether fell more sharply, around 6.5% to near $2,353. Solana and XRP each shed roughly 4–5%, and Zcash underperformed among major assets. Liquidations across major venues reached hundreds of millions of dollars, predominantly long positions.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of roughly $150–$261 million on October 14 (sources varied between about $150.5 million and $261 million), reversing prior inflows and underscoring fragile institutional demand after the previous week’s roughly $681 million in redemptions. Total Bitcoin ETF net assets remained near $105 billion.

Analysts noted that the stronger inflation data reinforced “higher-for-longer” rate concerns, weighing on liquidity and risk appetite. Bitcoin’s correlation with equities remained elevated amid the Asian selloff. While some traders eyed support near $80,000–$81,300, the combination of macro data, ETF flows, and regional equity weakness kept sentiment defensive heading into further U.S. releases (PPI, retail sales, Beige Book) and the Fed’s October 27–28 decision window. The September CPI was the last major inflation reading before that meeting, following the Fed’s September hike to a 3.75%–4.00% target range.

U.S. Spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs See Significant Weekly Outflows

Published

on

U.S.-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $681 million in net outflows over the trading week of October 5–9, 2026—the largest weekly withdrawal since June—ending a three-week streak of inflows, according to SoSoValue data. Combined with spot Ethereum ETF outflows of approximately $542 million, total redemptions for the two flagship categories reached about $1.223 billion.

Fidelity’s FBTC led Bitcoin ETF withdrawals with roughly $380 million, followed by Ark & 21Shares’ ARKB at about $207 million. Morgan Stanley’s MSBT was among the few products to post modest inflows. On the Ethereum side, BlackRock’s ETHA accounted for the bulk of outflows at approximately $477 million. Ethereum products extended a streak of consecutive daily outflows that had already reached nine sessions by the end of the week. Midweek saw the heaviest pressure, including a single-day Bitcoin ETF outflow near $485–$487 million on October 7—the largest daily figure since late June—followed by further redemptions on October 8 before a small positive print on October 9.

Despite the outflows, Bitcoin traded resiliently in the low-to-mid $80,000s early in the period before dipping toward the low $83,000s and briefly testing lower levels around October 12. Analysts highlighted $82,000 as a key support level. Total net assets in U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs stood near $105.84 billion at the close of the week (about 6.38% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization), with cumulative net inflows since launch still above $57 billion. Bitcoin dominance hovered near 59–60% of the roughly $2.81 trillion total crypto market capitalization on the CoinMarketCap snapshot around October 12.

Market participants pointed to elevated Treasury yields, inflation concerns, and broader risk-off sentiment as contributing factors. Upcoming U.S. CPI data (due around October 14) was widely viewed as the next major catalyst that could influence near-term flows and price action. While single-day figures later showed continued modest outflows in some sessions, the week’s reversal marked a notable interruption to prior institutional inflows after several weeks of net positive activity.
