Bitcoin Slips Under $79,000 as Fed Rate-Hike Odds Hold Near 60%

Published

on

Bitcoin spent Tuesday in the high $78,000s, with prints from about $78,300 to $78,900 after briefly losing $79,000. Some sessions tagged the low $80,000s and gave them back. The weekly high near $82,000–$82,300 is a memory. Two weeks of failed closes above $80,000 is the chart. The reason is still the same tape that broke the handle after Friday’s payrolls: a labor market that added 162,000 jobs in August, unemployment stuck at 4.1%, and a Federal Reserve meeting on September 16 that markets will not write off.

Sixty percent is a range, not a verdict

CME FedWatch and fed-funds futures have the September 25 bp hike — target 3.75%–4.00% versus a hold at 3.50%–3.75% — around 58–60%. Polymarket was softer, near 51–52% on the same question. That gap is the trade. Social feeds treated Friday’s jobs print as a hawkish regime change. The rate market moved less than the bitcoin candle. A CoinDesk read on Monday was blunt: odds were already in the high-50s before payrolls; the violent drop from $81,300 toward $78,700 looked larger than the actual shift in hike probability.

What did move is the discount rate. The 10-year has sat near 4.80%. The two-year jumped toward 4.42% on the jobs release. Brent has been quoted from the low $90s into the mid-$90s, with some tapes near $97.50 on the same U.S.–Iran risk that lifted yields last week. Non-yielding assets do not like that cocktail. Bitcoin is trading it.

ETFs are still buying the dip they cannot prevent

This is not an outflow story.

U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs took in about $987 million in the week through September 4, a third straight green week and a three-week haul near $3.8 billion. Thursday’s $731 million — IBIT about $454 million — remains the largest day since mid-January. Friday, after payrolls, was still a net $175 million. Year-to-date the complex is still roughly $1 billion underwater. August and early September have only narrowed the hole. Price can fall while creations stay positive. That is what a rates shock looks like when the structural bid is intact.

Corporate treasuries have not vanished either. Strategy’s late-August 4,603 BTC add and Strive’s 1,800 BTC print still sit on the tape as evidence that $78,000–$80,000 was an acceptable corporate level. The market has not been willing to hold the level those buyers paid.

Alts after the circus

Zcash’s trip through $1,000 — first durable four-figure print in a decade, Grayscale ZCSH past $400 million AUM — is the kind of move that mean-reverts when bitcoin loses a handle. Dash’s 40% privacy spike was even thinner. Both can trade mixed or lower on a $78,000 bitcoin tape without saying anything new about shielded pools or ETFs. Beta first, narrative second. That is the rotation dying down, not privacy being “cancelled.”

The only dates that matter this week

Thursday, September 10: U.S. PPI and the ECB.
Friday, September 11: August CPI, 8:30 a.m. Eastern.
Wednesday, September 16: FOMC.

A soft CPI can knock hike odds back under 50% and give $80,000 a third try. A hot print with oil still bid makes $77,000–$78,000 the conversation and $75,000–$76,000 the next shelf some desks already have on the pad. Resistance into the meeting is still the $81,000–$82,500 zone that rejected twice.

Until Friday, treat sub-$79,000 as the jobs report and the 10-year doing their job — and treat the $3.8 billion three-week ETF streak as the reason this is a range, not a cascade. The Fed path sets the ceiling. The wrappers set the floor. Neither has been cancelled. Only one of them is allowed to reprice before September 16.

Spot bitcoin ETFs flip to a ~$487 million outflow

Published

on

Tuesday’s US spot bitcoin ETFs took in about $119 million, the fourth inflow in five sessions. Wednesday reversed that. SoSoValue-linked reports put net outflows at $487 million, the largest day since 25 June on one compilation, at $484.9 million. BlackRock’s IBIT led with about $208 million, Fidelity’s FBTC with about $105 million, then ARKB at about $102 million, GBTC at about $39 million, BITB at about $28 million and HODL at about $3.5 million.

The day before had looked like the thin bid was stabilizing. Creations in the week ended 2 October had already fallen to the low hundreds of millions, with IBIT the main buyer and FBTC the fund seeing outflows. Tuesday’s $119 million fit that pattern. Wednesday did not. IBIT, the fund that had been absorbing shares while others leaked, led the redemption. That is a different tape from a rotation inside the complex. It is the complex selling.

The stock is still large: about $107.4 billion in net assets, roughly 6.41% of bitcoin’s market cap, and $57.3 billion of cumulative net inflows. A one-day redemption does not unwind that base. It does remove the marginal buyer on the day the range broke. Bitcoin closed at $83,275.93, down 2.67%, after trading near $86,600 a day earlier and printing a Bloomberg low near $82,759. The post-breakout band of roughly $83,000–$87,000 was tested from underneath on the same session the creations flipped.

Ether funds had already been bleeding. US spot ether ETFs logged about $202 million of outflows on Tuesday, a six-session streak near $408 million, while bitcoin funds were still taking in cash. Wednesday closed that gap from the other side. Ether finished at $2,573.53, down 4.60%. The base asset and the beta asset redeemed together into a Hormuz shock that had Brent above $101 and the 10-year near a 24-year high.

For the range, the flow number is the one that matters more than the oil headline. A reclaim of $85,500 was the resistance that would restore the band. That reclaim needs a buyer. A $487 million outflow is the opposite print, and it landed on the day $84,000 failed. If Thursday’s creations do not flip back, $81,000 is the figure CoinMarketCap’s desk already flagged, and the cumulative $57.3 billion does not trade against it. The stock is the base. The daily creation is the bid. Wednesday took the bid off.
